Ecommerce Templates

ECommerce Templates has worked well for us on one site and less we onll another. It is a php, MySQL based system that has been around for years and has a significant number of users. The cost is about $175 depending on what sort of template you want with it. They charge $30 per six months to keep getting updates.

On the first site we built with it, it has worked well. This was a traditional parts business with a more than usually computer savvy manager. It has been very stable, never crashed, and the very few issues which have come up were taken care of by tweaks to the configuration file.

They actively update their code and some features have gotten easier to use over the three years we have had it operating.

The second customer we tried it with was much more heavily into product images as her main presentation technique and less computer skilled. That has not work so well and we spent a lot of time customizing the code to make it do what she wants. Such customization is difficult because the updates tend to overwrite changes and we have to re-do our patches.

When we look at the actual code behind the product we can tell it has been in use for a while and will eventually need to be rebuilt from the ground up. There is a lot of complexity resulting from changes and upgrades the original design did not anticipate. I am sure the authors spend more and more of their effort with maintenance and testing.
