Amazon.com Webstore

Amazon webstores look interesting for two big reasons:

  • You can have as many distinct stores as you want for a single monthly payment. For someone like me who likes to build many niche websites around long tail terms, this makes an affordable plan.
  • The webstores use all the Amazon processing systems to handle payments, and other features. That removes a lot of worry and complexity from the equation.

Update: I closed my Webstore account within a couple of hours when I realized:

  • There are several huge restricted categories (Books & Jewelry were the ones that concerned me) that require approval to sell in. Forum postings indicated such approval was never given.
  • Everything is tied to your individual Amazon account. Therefore there is no way to sell an individual website.

It was disappointing because I had high hopes for it.

The best analogy I can think of is that a webstore is like renting an apartment in a large apartment building in a location where the landlord is not restricted by any rules or regulations. It's their way or the highway.

If you value control and want to retain the flexibility to sell what you want you will have to build your own site.
