I was distracted from my Magento study by the discovery of the Web Video University online education program. I had not given video any serious consideration but I took advantage of a seven day, $1 trial of the membership program. It has been four days now and I have lots of food for thought.
There is no question images are important for selling stuff. When we first started buying things on Ebay the transition to listings with pictures was just getting started. I used to play a game reading a written product description and then seeing how close my mental visualization was to the actual picture of the item. Then answer was almost always "Not very close."
A picture can also reduce the amount of text wheich is needed to describe something. This is not necessarily a good things in terms of content the search engines can index, but makes it much quicker and easier for visitors to understand what you are trying to tell them.
However, I have never had any yearning to make films, I watch almost no TV, and I see very few movies. The idea of me as a video producer is something of a stretch. Because all things video are new to me, a decision to add video to the process of selling stuff requires a significant committment of time and money. If I do this I will eventually have to purchase an expensive video camera, wireless microphone, and video editing software.
However, for getting started I think, at this time, only the video editing software is necessary. This seems a little odd, but in fact the video software can do a lot starting with still images, purchased stock video clips, and a few other inexpensive tools.
The next decision point is justifying downloading the video editing software for a thirty day free trial and committing the time to learning to use it. This is forced by my feeling I will not be able to tell exactly how useful videos are without learning more about what can be done with them. This is always the problem with having your own business. Will the loss of productivity while I learn something new be repaid by increased productivity on the other side?
